THE JOY OF PAINTING WITH WORDS: MASTER CALLIGRAPHER KAZ TANAHASHI TEACHES IN MONTREAL
6 February 2011 —
From March 4-6, 2011, Kazuaki Tanahashi will lead ENJOY THE BRUSH!, a compelling, spirited, and unique workshop offering a powerful opportunity for self-study in the context of art practice. Participants will explore the 1,700-year-old wisdom of this East Asian art form, highlighting the play between word and image so essential to Chinese and Japanese culture.
Those interested in learning the basics of brushwork will also have the chance to observe the movements of their own minds—the inner criticisms and judgments that keep them from fully enjoying each moment. Tanahashi will guide workshop participants in artistic interpretations and improvisations, opening up new possibilities for enjoyment and discovery in the creative process.
Presented in the context of the third Montreal Zen Poetry Festival—in which poets, translators and Zen monks engage in dynamic performance and conversation—ENJOY THE BRUSH! is a not-to-be missed opportunity to learn the art of calligraphy. The Poetry Festival’s Sunday brunch will also feature Tanahashi discussing his translations of the poetry of Ryokan, one of the most famous Zen poet-calligraphers of Japan.
Kazuaki Tanahashi is an artist, writer and Zen teacher. His brushwork has been shown in solo exhibitions all over the world, featuring new genres of one-stroke paintings and multi-color Zen circles. He has devoted much of his life to the translation of Zen Master Dogen. The biennial Montreal Zen Poetry Festival aims to explore the relationship between Zen Buddhism and the literary arts, including the work of both contemporary poets and translators of Chinese and Japanese verse.
